Latest 7 Magazine: Bright Whites - March 2011

"Seek out a sought-after smile with professional teeth whitening.

Over the years, teeth become stained by the foods and drinks we consume: coffee, tea, red wine... they all play a part in discolouring teeth. Smoking further stains teeth and the natural bright white shade becomes darkened. Whitening treatment is an affective way of lightening the teeth. The results will vary between people and the type of bleaching process chosen.
Whitening can transform discoloured teeth. Laser/in-surgery teeth whitening with a proper consultation is recommended. It's a bleaching process that uses a peroxide-based bleaching gel of varying strength. Laser teeth whitening or in-surgery whitening produces instant results. A consultation with your dentist beforehand will check you are suitable for treatment: deciding factors include gum disease and other dental problems. "There are, of course, some teeth that won't change heavily," says Christina Chatfield of Dental Health Spa in Brighton. "Filled teeth, dead teeth, crowns and veneers, for example. X-rays can highlight which teeth are unlikely to change and some teeth can be bleached from the inside."
Professional teeth whitening uses a bleaching compound containing a high concentration of peroxide. "With the peroxide at a high concentration, care is needed to protect the lips, gums and soft tissues," says Christina, who has been nominated for Hygienist of the Year in the Dentistry Awards 2011. "Your dentist will isolate your gums and lips with a protective material to avoid any potential damage or burning."
Home whitening kits have a lower concentration of peroxide so there is less chance of any damage, but the results build up over time. With professional teeth whitening, the results are instant.
At Dental Health Spa in Brighton, tooth whitening with custom trays is the most popular form of whitening treatment, and gives you control over the results. "Impressions of your teeth are take and used to create trays designed especially for you and your mouth," Christina explains. "You then simply need to place a few drops of whitening gel in the tray and wear them over your teeth for either a short period during the day - Pola Day - or overnight - Pola Night. Results can be seen in just a few days, although we normally recommend wearing the trays for five to ten days or nights. This is a professional whitening system, not a cheap alternative."
Zoom! whitening treatment is the most popular method used to brighten the teeth. Brighton Smiles in Hove and Dental Health Spa both offer Zoom!, which gives rapid results in under and hour. "The Zoom! treatment can whiten teeth by up to several shades, brightening your teeth dramatically to its natural shade," says Shala Imini of Brighton Smiles. "Treatment begins with lips and gums being covered and a gel applied to the teeth. A special light is positioned over your teeth to activate the gel, which gently penetrates the teeth, breaking up stains and discolouration."
The longevity of teeth whitening treatment can vary. If you do not smoke or consume a lot of food and drink that cause staining, then your bright smile can last for around three years. This timescale will vary depending on lifestyle and the whitening process used. "Everything requires maintenance," says Christina. "Laser bleaching is best topped up with trays, perfectly moulded, supplied by the dental clinic to top up as needed."
Sensitivity with whitening is an issue and it is unpredictable as to who gets it. As a result, whitening should be carried out by a dental professional. It's a dental cosmetic procedure, and it can show a marked difference to the colour of your teeth. The result of professional teeth whitening - whichever method you choose (Zoom! method or trays) - can significantly brighten your smile.
Professional teeth whitening is currently offered at the great deal of just £250, which includes professional treatment, and instant, long-lasting results."
